The 2023 Astra Environmental Workshop 2023: Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA) Pekayon’s Commitment to the Environment for Today and the Future of Indonesia

BEKASI, WEST JAVA: One by one, various types of leaves were neatly arranged on a white cloth spread out in a meeting hall. On a typical day, it is a scene of craftswomen working together, arranging leaf after leaf into patterns to make eco-print fabrics. However, it was different today. The craftswomen were guiding a group of visitors who wanted to learn the process of making eco-print batik at Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA) Pekayon, Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday morning (11/23).

Astra, along with several journalists and bloggers, visited KBA Pekayon as a form of support for environmental preservation. KBA Pekayon has been fostered by Astra since 2015.

“Kampung Berseri Astra is one of the Company’s initiatives that focuses on sustainable community development. Astra continues to support environmental actions implemented in Kampung Berseri Astra, including KBA Pekayon,” said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Riza Deliansyah.

During the visit, participants were invited to learn about the various environmental preservation efforts implemented by local residents through activities such as eco-printing, a tour of the 17-hectare KBA, the KBA Pekayon Green Zone Go Green Mini Tour, waste-sorting practices, the making of aromatherapy and other products from used cooking oil, eco-enzyme making, and education on clean and healthy living.

In KBA Pekayon, residents also grow ornamental, edible, and medicinal plants, making use of limited spaces such as rooftops and house yards. These plants not only contribute to a greener environment but also serve as a source of food. Any surplus from the harvest can be sold, providing an additional source of income for the residents.

About KBA Pekayon

Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA) is a community-based development program that integrates Astra’s four sustainable social contribution pillars in one village community.

These four pillars outlined in Astra’s Public Contribution Roadmap are “Astra for a Healthy Indonesia”, “Astra for a Smart Indonesia”, “Astra for a Green Indonesia”, and “Astra for a Creative Indonesia”. Through implementing the KBA program, Astra aims to create clean, healthy, smart, and productive communities in accordance with these four pillars.

In the health pillar, KBA Pekayon has integrated health services posts for mothers, children, and the elderly (posyandu and poswindu) that conduct door-to-door services routinely. Local residents also actively participate in regular group fitness activities.

Meanwhile, in the education pillar, KBA Pekayon has a reading garden, an Astra scholarship program, and a green school program for local schools. The scholarship program involves a rigorous selection process by KBA Pekayon and Astra.

In the environmental pillar, the proklim lestari village engages in activities to mitigate and adapt to environmental changes, including composting, managing a waste bank, utilizing renewable energy, and implementing energy-saving practices and greening efforts.

The waste bank program educates residents on waste sorting, which results in a total of 570kg of single-use plastic waste collected to date. There is also a program to make organic soap from used cooking oil.

To reduce single-use plastic waste in KBA Pekayon, various activities are carried out, including the Reduce Market Plastic Movement (Gempar), which educates traders at local markets and mobile vegetable vendors about the harms of providing single-use plastic bags.

In the entrepreneurship pillar, KBA Pekayon has a cooperative that serves as a platform for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in RW 08 to RW 11 to promote and sell their products. In the KBA, which is home to 800 families, there are at least 50 active MSMEs.

“Astra’s presence in this village boosts our motivation to take action, as we share the same vision of empowering the community in the fields of health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship,” said KBA Pekayon leading figure Lala Gozali.

As of this year, Astra has fostered 194 KBAs, 78 of which are recognized as PROKLIM villages, demonstrating Astra’s commitment to increasing community involvement in climate change mitigation. Astra has also fostered 1,060 Desa Sejahtera Astra (DSA) to develop rural economies based on local resources in collaboration with the central government, regional governments, and village communities. Through the DSA program, a number of MSMEs in KBAs and DSAs across 34 provinces in Indonesia have successfully exported their products.

Astra’s dedication to developing KBA Pekayon, which educates the community about the environment in an integrated and sustainable manner for Indonesia’s present and future, is in line with Astra’s mission to Prosper with the Nation while supporting Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
